12:05 am - Lost Metropolis footage found!

How excited am I that the missing half-hour of Metropolis footage cut from the original was just discovered in Argentina?

Very, very, excited. It's rather the holy grail of cinema, isn't it?

I've been away from my journal for quite some time. Where have I been? Why, nearly everywhere... I've been doing too much sewing for my own good, since all of these events keep cropping up. There have been too many sleepless nights with blue dawn seeping in through the curtains; there have been heavy eyelids and half-packed picnic baskets.... This way, if you please... )

I seem to have alighted (on my feet, happily) after flying this way and that for heaven knows how long... I can't keep up with myself, but I will try and share a few excerpt from the last few months...

Somewhere in there, before leaving for Italy, M. and I visted one of my favorite places in this favorite town of mine, la Gallerie d'Anatomie Comparee:

07:30 pm - San Francisco? Yes please.

This is it. We'll be making our way overseas on the 11th of March and staying until April 3rd. I am excited to see my favorite people (and yes I do mean you, Miss Voodoo Lily). Yay! And I'm finally bringing Ze Count! So...

Please help, O you who are informed. What should we see/do in the Bay Area during that time? Besides the Vintage (ahem) Fashion Expo, the Frolicking Friskies, and Le Coloniale? What do you know that I don't?

11:25 am - ***Tonight!***

If you are in Paris, DO NOT miss this! It's one of the most fun events that happens all year...

**The BAL INTERLOPE, Saturday March 1st, 2008.**

The ball is in the tradition of the "Carnaval Interlope" launched at the Magic City in 1922, the only night out in the year when tranvestitism was accepted in Paris.

There will be couples dancing and crazy pop music, and more drag queens than you could shake a soiled handkerchief at.

The madness starts at 10:30 pm. Entry is 22.00€. All this at what's left of the 1900 ballroom that is L' Elysee Montmartre, 72, Boulevard de Rochechouart, M° : Anvers.

A few hours ago a sprightly old Frenchman on a spur-of-the-moment decision, ripped one of my wisdom teeth right out of my jaw. The decision was mine, but I passed out anyway. Please let the pain end. Thank you.

I'm mournful and somewhat lost tonight... I'm alone on the farm, carrying firewood this way and that, trying to keep the creeping frosty air at bay.

There was a minor fire here just before I arrived hom, and while it didn't reach the house and no-one was hurt, my beautiful 1929 Plymouth was reduced to a pile of smoking scrap-metal.

I am trying to remain philosophical about it. Much better to lose a (*vintage*!) car than my family or the house I grew up in.

I will miss the horn that said, "AwOOOgah" though...

So here are a few recent memories to make myself glad again:

A while back, and I found someone's brand-new cellphone on the metro, still packaged. There was a name printed on the receipt, so we tracked the person down, and he came and picked it up from us. He seemed a bit gruff at the time, but a month later he showed up at our house smiling, with a basket full of delicious little cakes so that we could celebrate Ramadan:

Waking up in California means:

going to see my favorite can-can girl perform with her troupe at the Dickens Faire:

and seeing the marvel that is Tit 4 Tat at the Uptown in Oakland... oh my. That Miss Lulu...

I'm off to the grim and foggy North coast until early Friday. I'll catch up with you all soon. "You all" means [info]simulacrum.

11:31 pm - a Yemenite song

"Out of sight is my beloved.
For a year and two months,
Never returned.
Alas people
She left
And deserted me.

To whom shall I complain,
And would understand me?
Before whom shall I cry,
And would pity me?..."

I love Yemenite music and dance. The video quality is dreadful, but oh...

I've reserved tickets to come home to California on the 13th. I'll be there until the 29th, and back in Paris in time for C. and J.P.'s New Year's party, which will be set in 1912. I love how specific they are.

Is [info]andrea_sperelli coming with me? His passport agonies drag on and on... It really looks like I'll be making the voyage alone.

Last night we made a heroic trek out along the cold quais of the 13th arrondissement to Les Frigos, the (in)famous artists' squat. That whole area around the national library is straight out of Jacques Tati's "Playtime"- inhumane glass cubes... and there in the middle is this 1920s factory, looking, with its French roof and water tower, like a haunted castle surrounded by withered gardens. Passing to and fro amongst the weeping willows and wheelbarrows was Paris' young pseudo-intello set, Weimar hairdos and stilletto heels included. We'd all come to see Ernesto Tomasini, of whom I knew next to nothing and oh my, we weren't disappointed. Max Raabe has an evil castrato twin! To know him is to love (and fear) him.

One of the episodes I forgot to recount, on Weimar night, was the appearance and disappearance of the famous F.
His first manifestation of the evening was this:

It was a sort of Sarah Bernhardt-does-the-1790s sort of affair. "I think I'll wear *four* wigs this time!" He was going to another party the same night, where the theme was White, with a Touch of Lace. He gave them more than touch.

So then around midnight I get a phone call, "Come out on the balcony!"

And there he is, still in his bustle, on a Velib' bicycle... This was in the middle of the metro strikes, so he'd cycled back to our house, bowling the crowds over at the Bastille.

After shimmying upstairs, he tore off his white gown and made an appearance as Fantomette. How does a pre-teen French superheroine fit into a Weimar party? Fantomette goes where she pleases, and wears vintage deutschmarks in her hair!
